This allows the floor plan to respond directly to the site.
A canyon garage may receive excellent light from only one or two directions. Rather than spreading rooms evenly, the plan can assign the strongest orientation to everyday living and use deeper or more enclosed areas for bathrooms, closets and service functions.
Window orientation should be tested in section where necessary. Higher windows, landscape, wall depth, selective glazing, and carefully positioned patios can preserve daylight while reducing direct views into neighboring living spaces or terraces.
One carefully positioned larger opening can orient the entire living space. The remaining walls can then support furniture, storage, privacy and technical functions rather than becoming secondary walls of glass without a clear purpose.

Ceiling volume, carefully placed built-ins, long sightlines, concentrated plumbing, and a connection to the best existing exterior level can make the original footprint feel considerably more generous.
Existing roof geometry can be studied together with insulation, structure, mechanical systems and lighting. Where useful height can be preserved, the interior gains visual space without increasing the amount of exterior site work.
Hillside structures do not always provide perfectly symmetrical interiors. Full-height cabinetry, closets, utility zones, and kitchen storage can turn awkward edges into useful built-in functions while leaving the primary living space visually clearer.
Service functions should be located around realistic utility routes, but the plan can also consider what is being sacrificed. Preserving a valuable open wall for the living area can have a larger spatial benefit than arranging plumbing purely around geometric symmetry.
The exterior space should follow the terrain rather than fight it. A protected landing or terrace that meets the living floor naturally can provide daylight, air, views and everyday outdoor use without requiring a large intervention into the hillside.
On a constrained canyon property, spatial quality can come from height, view, built-in efficiency and a well-positioned exterior level rather than additional square footage.
Principle 04 — Make the Technical Drawings Explain the Canyon Site
A conventional floor-plan package may not communicate enough on a steep property. The drawing set can use site plans, elevations and sections to explain how the garage meets the terrain, where residential access occurs, which walls are modified, and how the proposed interior connects with available outdoor levels.
Site documentation should focus on the conditions that affect the conversion. That can include exterior levels, retaining walls, slopes, circulation, nearby construction and areas where utilities or new openings must interact with a constrained site.
Sections can be used during design rather than reserved for permit drawings. They can reveal whether a new doorway meets a useful exterior level, whether a window captures a real view, and whether interior height can be retained within the existing roof.
A hillside building is rarely experienced from one straight-on elevation. Three-dimensional studies can help refine glazing, materials, wall planes, roof relationships and landscape from the angles that are physically relevant to the site.
