Some garage roofs allow a higher or partially vaulted interior. Structure, insulation, lighting, and mechanical systems should be coordinated together so useful height is not lost simply because a conventional flat ceiling is easier to draw.
The obvious patio location is not always the most usable one. Aligning the main room with a shaded or private exterior area can give the residence more functional space and a stronger sense of independence from the primary house.
